Welcome to the NYADEC Partnership

The University of New England’s Department of Environmental Studies (DES) began formal collaborations with NYADEC, the Nyando District Centre for Environmental Conservation, in 2010 through Dr. Richard Peterson’s study abroad course, ENV 348-Environment, Health and Community Development in East Africa.

Since roughly 2008, NYADEC has been working to combat severe soil erosion on the slopes of the Lake Victoria Basin in the Nyando District of Kenya’s Nyanza Province, south of the city of Kisumu.

Dr. Peterson and his students, in collaboration with NYADEC staff, have created this blog site in order to raise awareness about NYADEC’s ongoing activities, and to document and disseminate information about the activities, events, reports, and research that emanates from this continuing partnership between the DES, UNE students, and NYADEC. We encourage you to explore the various links and menu tabs to learn more about this exciting collaborative venture forging long-term connections between Maine and Kenya.
