My 40th Anniversary Hike…

January 25th, 2012 by njandreau

Forty years ago, while a sophomore at the University of Northern Iowa, I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine: April 2 to August 31, 1972. Thanks to a sabbatical leave from the University of New England, I have the opportunity to attempt this hike again!

I will be using this blog to share my experiences with those who care to login.

I leave for Atlanta, GA tomorrow morning (01/26/12) and will fly the 2000 plus miles in only a few hours… The return to Maine will likely take six months. One major change from my 1972 hike will be the time of year. This year my hike will begin not in spring, but in winter. A second difference is that this time I will have the opportunity to reflect on the impact of my first experience, on the next forty years of my life.

I embark on this journey with a willingness to question the value of long-distance hiking, for those who chose to journey in this way. I look forward to new challenges and experiences; and, I hope that some of what I acquire will also be of interest to you!

Kindest Regards,

“Doc Holiday”
